The years rolled back for children at Rowsley CE Primary School last month, as they entered school on 13th February 1940 for a World War II day. Year 5 and 6 dressed in 1940s clothes, brought rations for their lunches instead of a hot school meal, carried their gas mask cases throughout the day and took cover during air raid sirens. Class teacher Mrs Hewitt, unrecognisable as a 1940s school mistress, taught lessons from wartime throughout the day, and the ladies from Rowsley Craft Club visited school for a ‘make do and mend’ session. This was a truly wonderful day that brought the spirit of wartime and the class topic alive.
