This year Winster is starting again with its annual Wakes Week and Carnival, following a long layoff because of Covid.
It begins with the crowning ceremony of the Carnival Queen, when the retiring 2021 Queen Kitty Lee and her attendants Jadzia Ashin, Eva Slater and Leah Crowther will pass on the crown to Jessica Webster, the Queen for 2022, and her attendants Macy Roper, Charlotte Slater and Connor McClay.
Popular events then follow throughout the week, with a Treasure Hunt, a Pet Show and the mighty East Beast cycle climb, Pub Quizzes, a Whist Drive, the very popular Hill Race, and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for Toddlers.
On Friday the plastic ducks will come out of two-years' quarantine and be hidden around the village for children to find. A new event on Wednesday night is Leicester Rocks, written by a Winster resident and featuring talented local musicians. Find your dancing cowboy boots for the Barn Dance on Friday, with a bar and BBQ down in the marquee on the school field.
Wakes Week comes to an end on Carnival Day, Saturday 2 July. This is a traditional event on Winster’s historic Main Street, which is closed for the occasion. Here you will find stalls of many sorts, children’s games, food and drink, beer at the Market House, street entertainers, Morris Dancing, Tug-o-War, a Brass Band and much more. And in the evening there is a BBQ and bar with entertainment on the school field.
