Following a two year break, 2023 saw the return of Winster Secret Gardens.
This year, Winster Secret Gardens will be on 20th and 21st July. Over 20 stunning gardens will be on show over the weekend in this friendly and picturesque village, many with spectacular views.
Talking to Anthea Rawlence and Clive Newton about secret gardens and why they do it every year, they explained the following:
We first opened our garden in about 1986 as a fundraiser for Winster Playgroup. It was billed as a ‘Secret Garden’ because, although quite large, none of it was visible from the road and people were curious. So when Winster Secret Gardens started in 1997 we were obvious candidates to be included. We’ve opened our garden almost every year since. There’s a bit of work involved to get the garden looking as good as possible. But it’s a very gratifying experience on the open weekend, because you just sit around listening to people saying nice things about your garden. And it’s an excellent fundraiser for village activities, pulling in lots of paying visitors from far and wide.
Whilst Winster may be small, the ambitions of the Secret Gardens team are huge and the organisers are proud to announce that the weekend truly does have something for everyone. Other attractions over the weekend include plant and craft sales, children’s ‘Gnome Hunt’, the ‘Winster Millennium Tapestry’, live music, art exhibition, cream teas, and a wide range of homemade refreshments. Ample, well organised parking is available at the top of the village with free Park and Ride to village centre. Entry £6, 2-day ticket £8, from outside the National Trust Market House and the ‘Park and Ride’ Car Park. Children go free, but must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds are in aid of local community projects and activities.
