Tideswell’s Wakes Week (17th-25th June 2023) once again welcomes hundreds of tourists, residents and local people who flock to the village to enjoy Tideswell Wakes Festivities.
Preparations are well underway for the anticipated crowds at the highlight of the week, the Carnival Parade, on Saturday 24th June which starts from the centre of Tideswell at 3pm. Tideswell Band lead the carnival parade of decorated floats and walking exhibitors which accompanies wakes royalty with visiting retinue’s from local villages and towns. Music and entertainment also from Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band, 1st Porthill Scout Drum Corps, The New Orleans Strollers and The Buxton Billarettes.
Musical entertainment from The Pantonic All Stars Steel Orchestra will kick start the carnival atmosphere from lunchtime in the central market area which has food and drink stands and a display of vintage tractors.
Organisers have spent the last few months working with partners and agencies including the police, St John’s Ambulance, community organisations and Derbyshire County Council to ensure that participants and visitors enjoy this special week of fun and fundraising.
The Chairman of Tideswell Wakes Festivities Committee, Andrew Turner commented, “Tideswell’s wakes week is a hugely important feature of the village calendar, it is a brilliant example of the community and council working together every year bringing tourists and people from the local area to our village. Carnival is not just about having a party on our streets – it is serious business. Our ambition is to make Tideswell carnival a key tourism attraction for the County,”
Andrew added “Last year saw the return of the carnival parade after covid and hopes this continues to grow.”
Throughout the week there are events and activities planned for all ages. The week’s festivities will be launched at the blessing of the wells and crowning of the wakes royalty at 3pm on Saturday 17th June with a musical extravaganza from 6pm at the George Inn.
Other highlights during the week include a 5k inter inns road race on Monday 19th, rock and bowls on Wednesday 21st, wakes quiz at the Star at 9pm on Thursday 22nd and Tideswell fell race on Friday 23rd June.
Tuesday 20th June is Litton Night, held at our neighbouring village, who will have an action packed fun evening for all ages. Events include tug of war and a classic car display.
You can also visit Tideswell’s “Cathedral of the Peak" church 10am-4pm every day during Wakes Week. There will be an exhibition and refreshments, including homemade cakes, will be available throughout the week from the Church Institute.
Fountain Square Church will also be open 10am-4pm every day during wakes week (excluding Sunday 25th) with an exhibition of local history and art. They will be serving tea and coffees and light lunches 12 til 4 daily.
