Many people are increasingly concerned about the environmental and global climate emergency. Even our own gardens and favourite green spaces show signs of change, our precious wildlife is affected by shrinking habitats, pollinators are becoming scarce and the seasons are shifting. Global events linked to Covid remind us of the importance of our connection with the natural world and with each other.
Contributors to the Christian Arts Festival have responded to these concerns with a collection of banners on an environmental theme made from re-cycled or re-purposed materials. The banners contain challenging messages about the damage to the environment but also words of hope as they encourage people to work together in the face of this crisis.
The banners were made by individuals and families all over the country, including Derbyshire, during the Covid lockdown. Not everyone involved had extensive art or textile experience but the beautiful banners they created all express a passionate concern about our responsibility to care for our world.
The exhibition in Tideswell is one of a series of exhibitions where people can be inspired by this transformation of unwanted materials into striking works of art. We would encourage anyone to come along and have a look.
