Pupils at Youlgrave Church of England Primary School decided to support the efforts of the Pommie Pilgrimage by creating their own sponsored walk around the village playing fields.
All 67 pupils took part along with supportive staff with Class 1 doing 5 laps and Class 2 and 3 doing 10 laps. Youlgrave church is a much loved building in the heart of Youlgrave village and a place where families join together at key times of the year, and where the school children enjoy collective workship every Friday during term time.
Last renovated over 150 years ago, the community is raising funds for a kitchen and loos to make it more welcoming - for children, the elderly and everyone in between - for the next 150. That fundraising - as well as awareness raising - is the reason for the Pommie Pilgrimage to all 42 Anglican Cathedrals across England!
The pilgrims have nearly raised the amount of £42000 which is a great support and start for the project which is likely to be six figures. This has been helped by the School children and their families who have raised £1700 of this £42,000.
Not only did the children get involved with the sponsored walk but they also enjoyed walking the labyrinth, specially created for the project that has also helped to raise part of the £42,000.
Lucy Barnwell, Vice Chair of the School Governors and Pommie Pilgrimage Committee Member said, "I am so proud of each and every one of the children at Youlgrave School who were brilliant and got stuck in with real enthusiasm to the walk and the fundraising.
"This project has been amazing because of the community spirit and support from the village, and my thanks must go to the amazing staff at the School for all the help they have given the Pommie Pilgrimage with their time and support for the children.
