MEMBERS OF THE CLAY OF ENGLAND SOCIETY VISIT BONSALL MONUMENTS

Alex Clay, David Clay and Paul Clay are pictured standing beneath the church window – the Clay coat of arms is the one on the right

Members of the Clay of England Society recently visited Bonsall to see the monuments of Robert Clay (1799- 1874).who was the miller and churchwarden at Bonsall. He was very much respected and in 1876 after he died local residents erected a water feature monument to his memory which still stands today.

The Clay of England Society members were quite surprised to find his name and the Clay coat of arms on a stained glass window inside the church at Bonsall.

Alex, David and Paul Clay, like other members of the Society have traced their ancestry back a number of centuries. David Clay 2nd left beneath the window is the secretary of the Society and his grandfather came from Wensley in South Darley. David is always pleased to hear from persons with the Clay surname and can be contacted at Email - dmclay@btinternet.com
