Thursday 2nd May saw the annual Matlock Charity Cup take place at Matlock Town FC, this year raising funds for Ashgate Hospice. There was also a Junior Charity Cup, prior to the match, sponsored by Cafe in The Park, keenly contested by Tansley Blues and Tansley Clarets, from which the Blues emerged victorious.
The main event saw a Tipsy Toad XI take on the Derbyshire Dales Legends, who went ahead early on through a close range Jack Stephenson goal. John Cooper looked to have doubled the lead soon after but his lob of the Toad keeper hit the bar and bounced to safety. Undeterred, Tipsy Toad hit their stride, equalising with a well taken Sam Foster strike, as they headed into half time looking to be in control of the game, with Chaz Bown and Marcus Vickery looking hungry for more goals. The Toad midfield of Harry Foster and Sam Elliot took a grip of the game and only strong Legends defending from Daz Webster, Dave Manning and keeper Kieran Rowlands kept them at bay. Having weathered the storm Legends were soon back in front, the mercurial Steve Wood latching on to a glorious pass and beating the Toad keeper. Victory was sealed late on when Legends captain Scott Taylor found the net with an unstoppable shot from just inside the area.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of spectators, players, officials and the business community of Matlock, £1,900 was raised at the event. Many thanks to Matlock Town FC, Ashgate Hospice and officials Mark Davis, Michael Hole and Owen Turton.
