The 750 year-old parish church in Wirksworth is in need of repairs to part of the roof, and other important work to the building. Our building is currently on the Heritage at Risk list, held by Historic England, which indicates that a building is in need of work to stop further deterioration. Buildings on the register are more likely to be eligible for funding to put right identified problems.
This work is needed to keep the building watertight and ready for its next 100 years, and is estimated to cost close to £1million. It is hoped that much of this money will come from national and local grant makers, to supplement local fund-raising, and applications are being prepared for submission later this year.
The work to be included in this programme includes:
• Replacement of Derbyshire stone tiles to transept* roofs
• Pointing to stonework
• Work to windows
• Work to stone paths around the churchyard
• Work to improve the heating and lighting, that will improve the experience of all the users and visitors to our building
• A programme of exploration and activities to further engage the community in; our folk (people), faith and foundations (physical and spiritual for both the town and the church)
This work will build on the successful project to re-lead the nave roof, carried out in 2019/2020.
When you come to the church, please look out for more information, and opportunities for you to share your views on what we are planning.
