Macaws

An Illustrated talk by Chloe Brown

Monday 16th September, 7.30pm

Our first talk of the new season is about Macaws. Macaws are found in central and southern America, Mexico and the Caribbean. They are particularly common in the Amazon. They are different from other parrots as they have long pointed tails and bare skin on the face. Their beaks are adapted for eating seeds and nuts, and their feet with two toes pointed forward and two toes pointed back are particularly useful for gripping and for climbing in trees, where they find their food. Some of the larger species will forage over 60 miles for food.

Some species are in decline as they are losing their habitat to deforestation, but in other areas, artificial nest boxes are being set up in protected forests to enable to birds to find a home and breed.

Chloe has a Harlequin Macaw called Motley, who can often be seen flying free in the Peak District. Her talk about these exotic birds will be informative, interesting and exciting.

Admission is £3 at Darley Dale Methodist Church Hall, Dale Road North, Darley Dale, Matlock DE4 2FT
