Quite a landmark year for the Wirksworth and District Christian Aid Group. It was way back in the summer of 1974 a group from all the churches gathered supporters to organise a house to house collection for Christian Aid. And 50 years later the charity has become established in the area and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to support projects in so many countries.
Christian Aid has provided humanitarian relief and long-term development support for poor communities worldwide, while highlighting suffering, tackling injustice and championing people’s rights.
The groundbreaking work began in 1945, founded by British and Irish churches to help refugees following the Second World War.
Here in Wirksworth, the group raises money in many creative ways. These include soup lunches, house to house collections, Christmas mulled wine stalls, summer parties, well dressing, catering for events, sponsored walks, charities fairs, 50p piece collections,
The next event not only supports Christian Aid but gives many other local charities the opportunity to raise much needed funds.
This takes place on the morning of November 9th in the Wellspring Church in Wirksworth.
