Wirksworth and District Christian Aid Group is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this
year. 50 years of raising funds for Christian Aid’s vital work of helping people in some of the world’s poorest communities to lift them and their families out of crippling poverty. Throughout the fifty years it has been an ecumenical group of Christians representing all the mainstream churches of the Town. During this time, the Wirksworth Group has raised over £330,000, which at today’s prices would be over £550,000. Fifty years, also, of awareness raising; helping us understand better some of the injustices that cause the growing inequalities that have a negative impact on those poor communities.
To celebrate this achievement, the group is marking the start of Christian Aid Week on Sunday 12th May at 4.30pm in The Maltings, DE4 4DQ for Afternoon Tea, with celebratory fizz and cake and time for reminiscence. This will be followed at 6pm by a special Christian Aid Service. Our guest speaker will be Pete Moorey, who is Christian Aid’s Head of Church and Community fund-raising and engagement. Peter has recently been on a fact-finding visit to Burundi, one of the poorest countries in the world and the focus of Christian Aid Week this year. So that we know how many to cater for, we ask you to let us know either through the Wirksworth Team Ministry Office 01629 824707 or directly to Bob Rhodes on 01629 823623.
During this jubilee year we are asking you to join in The Fifty x 50 pence Challenge, by saving the 50p pieces in a jar. When you have fifty, please return it to us through your CA representative, or bring it along to one of our events. You may wish to continue the challenge until you reach 100 fifty pence, making a magnificent £50. The Challenge ends at the end of September 2024 in time for our annual accounts. With thanks to all our supporters over the years.
